Growing Bougainvillea: A Story of Trial, Error, and Success

For me, growing Bougainvillea has been an exciting journey of trial, error, and unexpected learnings. In the beginning, when I planted it, just like any other gardener, I assumed that regular watering and frequent feeding would help it grow faster. Instead, I ended up with a plant full of leaves, and no flowers. It took me a little while to realise that Bougainvilleas actually thrive on a bit of neglect.

One of the biggest challenges I faced was controlling massive vegetative growth. After reading a lot, and experimenting, I reduced watering, stopped over-fertilising, and moved the plant to a location which received full sunlight for most of the day. Within a few weeks, there was improvement. I spotted little bud growth around the plant.

Pruning was another learning experience. I figured out that light pruning after each flowering cycle encouraged new branch growth resulting in a full, lush plant.

Over time, I also developed a unique approach: allowing the soil to dry completely between waterings – This encouraged even more flowering. While this may sound strange – it surprisingly work well on Bougainvillea plants.

Growing Bougainvillea taught me that understanding a plant’s natural habits is often more effective than constantly intervening. Sometimes, the best care is simply providing the right conditions and letting nature do the rest.
